Technology Trends Expected to Revolutionize the Medical Industry by 2020
by Dan Munson
Each century throughout human history has brought significant advancement in the medical industry. For example, life expectancy in the past century has extended by approximately 25 years. The shift is attributed to the development of the cardiac pacemaker, smallpox eradication, and penicillin.
Technology could enable researchers to carry out partial human brain transplant, repair the cardiovascular system, and use genetic engineering to alter the human DNA. In the future, advancements in research, computer technology, and design will change how we access health care. For example, computer technology will allow for health insurance comparison and reduce doctor visits significantly. Here are some of the tech advancements that will revolutionize healthcare by 2020.
Recently, scientists have invented the intelligent knife, also referred to as iKnife, to be used for surgery. iKnife will use electric currents to generate heat that surgeons will use to make incisions on the human tissue. As a result, blood loss will reduce significantly. iKnife will also use mass spectrometers to detect all chemical ingredients in the specimen. That way, it will be easier to locate cancer that causes malignant tissue and analyze vaporized smoke in real-time. Surgeons all over the world have embraced iKnife as it reduces the time taken to perform a surgical operation.
Virtual tools that are already in use have set the future of augmented reality in the medical industry in motion. For example, Google's digital contact lens will help manage chronic conditions such as diabetes. It will use tears to measure blood sugar levels. Currently, the design prototype is in the testing phase, and healthcare regulators will have to give digital contact lens full potential when the government approves it. Similarly, the projection of digital information will allow Microsoft's Hololens to revolutionize healthcare technology. With virtual reality technology, surgeons don't have to make incisions to view internal anatomy. That way, surgeons will carry out surgical procedures with precise excisions.
Radiology is one of the fastest-growing healthcare technology. Technology has enabled development of medical equipment that can diagnose a host of healthcare biomarkers and symptoms simultaneously. Soon, physicians will use multifunctional MRIs machines to measure the percentage of cancerous cells in the body. Some medical equipment will allow physicians to carry out a prompt diagnosis.
Medical 3D Printing
If biotechnologists can print even living cells, don't be surprised to see 3D printed drugs. Medical 3D printing will redesign the entire pharmaceutical world. However, the challenge will be regulation since anyone can print any patented medication at home. In fact, medics will print simpler organs such as ionic ears at the patient's bedside. The world of medicine is already using 3D printing technology.
Cyborgs are already a reality and are expected to populate the sci-fi terrain in the future. People will soon start to implant devices into their bodies just to look cool. Future medical technologies will not only enable scientists to repair impaired eyesight but also create superhuman power that can use eagle eyesight to replace impaired human sight. Examples of real-life cyborgs include patients wearing pacemakers or defibrillators. However, there will be more advances where devices will be implanted into human bodies without undergoing surgery.
Social Media Crowdsourcing
Medical communication affects everyone in the world including medical professionals and patients. Social media has the potential to make it possible to crowdsource, transmit, and store medical data. That will make it easier for medical professionals and e-patients to access medical information anywhere as long as they are connected to the internet. The power of social media crowdsourcing can't be underestimated.
Artificial Intelligence Controlled Brain
Scientists see the possibility of using the neurological information to create digital selves in the future. That means human brain could be uploaded to a computer and get transformed into a digital world. The opportunity for scientists to develop an artificial intelligence controlled mind could be around the corner. Scientists might not be so far away from discovering the secret of immortality.
